The Association started in 1917 when some like-minded School Attendance Superintendents were preparing for a major new piece of legislation: The Education Bill 1917. The first meeting of 24 Superintendents was hosted in Birmingham and the host John Stevenson was elected as President.
The Association has had a number of name changes however it continues today to safeguard children and promote school attendance.
